No matter what industry your company is in, it's employees' productivity and creativity are it's most valuable resource, and it has been proved that a well planned workplace will save time and greatly increase staff creativity.

Even though the workplace is changing, too many offices are still stuck in the 80's & 90's. Here are 5 easy ways to create a more productive & creative office environment.

1. Natural light

A study by Northwestern University recently researched the effect that letting sunlight into the office had and the results were incredible. Office staff who had exposure to sunlight typically had nearly an hour more of sleep each night and their physical health, energy and overall quality of life were far superior.

Another study confirmed that the brain produces more serotonin (the chemical responsible for maintaining mood balance) on sunny days than it does on darker days.

The more happy and healthy your employees are, the more productive & motivated they are likely to be. A gloomy, dimly lit office is never going to foster a positive office culture so open the windows and blinds and let the sun in. Sunlight is certainly one thing we have in abundance in Perth so why not make the most of it.

2. Flexibile working arrangements

Flexible working arrangements can be incredibly benificial to employees and companies alike.

Employees that have flexible hours are better able to attend to their personal lives, meaning that at work they have far less distractions and are far more relaxed. Common sense tells us that these employees will be exponentially more productive than someone who is constantly attending to their personal agenda during office hours.

With the incredible pace that technology has developed and the change in the social demographic, we must embrace this idea or be left behind. Some Swedish companies are even trialling a 6 hour workday.

3. Colour

There are countless studies to prove that colours can affect our moods and impact productivity. Colors such as blue or green have been proved to create a more contented and productive environment, while colours like red and orange are believed to increase alertness, urgency and attention to detail.

4. Breaks

Everybody knows that the human brain can't handle high intensity work for very long at all. Productivity expert Colin Boyd advises that the best practise is to create a disciplined routine where your carve out 3 x 50 minute Focus Blocks for your most important tasks during which you allow no distractions. Once the 50 minutes us up, allow yourself 10 minutes to relax and recharge.

5. Movement

Getting up and moving around whilst at work makes employees healthier, happier and more alert. This can come in the form of breaks, standing desks or anything that gets people out of a traditional seated position. Why not take advantage of the great Perth weather to take a walk. Next time you get a request to join a meeting, suggest that it be a walking meeting.
