How to Keep Active in the Office

It’s not easy to keep active when you’re working 9-5. Office jobs require you to sit down, typing away on a computer, discussing projects with clients, and taking notes in meetings. Sitting down for hours at a time is normal. And when you’re busy, with your mind focused in a task, forgetting to get up and move around happens. But just because you work in a corporate setting, it doesn’t mean you can’t be active. Let’s go through some office tips to help you stay fit, physically and mentally.

Fit out your office, for a fit team.

The first (and most important) step to take to improving movement is to be conscious of it. At the start, if you need to set alarms every hour or 90 minutes to remind you to move, then do it. You don’t have to move around for ages, if you’re concerned about getting distracted. Put an exercise mat next to your office workstation and go through a few stretches. It’s good to get up and away from the desk. Let those unused muscles get a workout. Do this a few times throughout the day. You’ll notice the difference in how you feel.

Another great way to stay active is to get your team involved. Create a little bit of friendly competition or simply support each other to work out together. Why not form a weekly running group or sign up to a nearby gym together, so you can motivate each other to go before (or after) work? Accountability is extremely important for maintaining healthy habits.

The office environment is also important to mention. Are there boxes everywhere and free space is at a minimum? Is your desk cramped in the corner? If it’s a small space, chances are you probably won’t move around much, because you don’t need to.

A company’s culture can either encourage or prevent activity in the office. Do you feel comfortable to take a 10-minute walk if you’re feeling sore or unmotivated? Being chained to the desk because of deadlines isn’t a good excuse. You need to be able to listen to what your body’s telling you.

Office tips + ergonomic furniture.

Another great way to increase health and happiness in an office is by investing in ergonomic furniture. If you run a business, allow for room in your budget to switch to ergonomically designed workstations. And if you’re working in a team, recommend this as a way to improve productivity.

The environment which you work in plays a huge role in motivation, productivity, and health. Every office is different and often this is something you can’t control, especially if you work for someone. The best thing you can do is to work on your healthy mindset. If you prioritise movement and healthy eating no matter what’s going on at work, you’ll be a happier, more productive employee and business owner.

Consistency is key when it comes to health.
